Masu is used to serve sake as a measuring utensil that dates back to over 1,300 years ago. Nowadays, this cypress made Masu is widely used in izakayas and sake bars.
To serve:
1. Place a Sake glass inside the masu
2. Pour sake into glass until it overflows and spills into the masu. This performance is called Mokkiri Zake
3. The Masu catches the overflowed sake (usually until half full), and your sake glass is fully filled!
To drink:
1. Sip directly from the glassware placed inside the masu
2. Take the sake glass with one hand, hold the masu underneath with the other hand
3. Pour the sake in the masu back to the glass
4. The masu can now be used as a coaster!
